March is Adopt-a-Rescued-Guinea-Pig Month
The ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) has designated March as Adopt-a-Rescued-Guinea-Pig celebration month to encourage guinea pig adoption from animal rescue shelters.
Many people aren’t aware that thousands of guinea pigs are surrendered to shelters each year… and these sweet little critters all need loving homes. For instance, Petfinder.com, a national pet rescue-adoption website listing millions of adoptable pets across the country each year, listed more than 10,000 guinea pigs in 2012 alone.
If you’re thinking of adding a guinea pig or two to your pet family, consider finding your furry friend at a local or regional rescue shelter.
But before you do, if you’ve never owned a guinea pig, you’ll want to check out these resources so you know what to expect.
- The ASCPA offers guidance on safe guinea pig housing (cages), feeding, grooming, exercise and more.
- The Humane Society of the Unites States has a video that’s all about guinea pig care — what you should know before bringing one home.
Perhaps there’s a lovely little guinea pig just waiting for you.
